There are a number of highly sought-after neighborhoods and communities in the heart of Maryland. These areas fall between DC and Baltimore. If you are looking to buy a home in this area, it is important to evaluate all of your options and lay out the pros and cons for each location. To help get you started, I’ve listed out 5 excellent areas in Maryland, and what to look out for in each one:

  • Fulton, MD – Fulton is a fast-growing city driven by Maple Lawn. It is not overly crowded, so would be ideal if you like some peace and quiet or a small-town feel. There are several new restaurants and shopping centers that make it a super convenient area to live. Fulton is close to Rocky Gorge Reservoir where you can fish, kayak, horseback ride, and boat. This would be great for outdoorsy people, or people with children. Fulton also has a very low crime rate, which is a pro for anyone!

  • Elkridge, MD – Elkridge is very close to Baltimore, MD and Patapsco State Park. It is also extremely convenient to BWI Airport, which makes it an ideal location for anyone who travels frequently. There are several family owned businesses, and it is mainly made up of young professionals. Elkridge also has a fantastic school district!

  • Ellicott City, MD – Rated number 4 on Money’s 50 Top Places to Live, Ellicott City is a charming, historic area close to Baltimore. There are great shopping centers, parks, and farmer’s markets. The school district in Ellicott City is phenomenal; Centennial High School, Marriotts Ridge High School, and River Hill High School have particularly stellar reputations. The U.S. News & World Report named them the 10th, 9th, and 7th best public high schools in the state, respectively.

  • Woodstock, MD – Known for its great golf courses, including Turf Valley and Waverly Woods, and most sought-after school districts. There are also a number of different shopping centers and restaurants. Woodstock is up and coming with several different new construction home developments. There is also a very low crime rate in Woodstock.

  • Columbia, MD – Columbia is a highly sought-after area to live in. The population is very diverse. There are several shopping areas, including the Columbia Mall, and eateries. Columbia is also home to Merriweather Post Pavilion concert venue, Toby’s Dinner Theatre, Columbia Ice Rink, mini golf, and more! This would be a great place for first time homebuyers and families with young children.
