The county has a population of 1,017,859, with the median household per capita income of $99,435, making it one of the wealthiest counties in the United States. With that being said, 11% of Black or African American and 11.6% of Hispanic residents lives below the federal poverty level. Unfortunately, 49.4% of renters are “housing burdened” in that they pay more than one-third of their income for housing.
That is why, as a part of our Apex in Action initiative, we are sponsoring the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless’ (MCCH) Safe at Home campaign and virtual event. Proceeds from this event will be used to support local families, veterans, and individuals experiencing homelessness. In the last six months alone, MCCH has moved more than 131 men out of the emergency shelter into housing. Homelessness has hit almost every community hard as many have struggled to find and keep a job during the pandemic. MCCH has raised $225,000 this season to provide emergency shelter and permanent housing for those impacted by COVID-19, and we are proud to support their efforts in making a positive impact on our community.
